Trans is an umbrella term that includes several labels to indicate that someone is not cisgender (that your gender identity matches your birth sex). In the Netherlands, 1.8% do not identify exclusively or at all as male or female and are thus referred to as non-binary.

“Freedom of belief and expression is important to me. Everyone is allowed to think what they want about me and my gender identity. As soon as my rights and safety are restricted I find this a different story. If you do not believe in a nonbinary identity I encourage you not to identify yourself as such but not to use this opinion in positions of power not to use it to limit my right to exist.”

In terms of self-expression, Robin has been doing this for as long as he can
remember. (Alternative style of dress, dyed hair, piercings and tattoos).

It wasn’t until they were 25 that they discovcovered this was also related to gender. Little representation prevented them from giving their feelings a place. He thinks that’s why they find it so important to be visible themselves online, to be the representation that they missed out on.

“Some things I do just because I think this looks cool, and some
things feel really essential for me to be able to be myself.”
